Photography
Relationship
I photographed a pair of friends on the campus of Charleston Southern University (CSU). They met at CSU, and I wanted to show their friendship. For the photos, one thing I tried doing was using some flowers to frame them. I also enjoyed taking photos by the water, which provided some interesting background colors. It was challenging to figure out how to pose them at times, but I also enjoyed capturing the more natural shots of them laughing together or such.
Here’s some work I’ve done in studio. I’ve tried different lighting positions, and high and low photography in the studio. I love how dramatic the lighting can look when done in studio.
Product
The Hope Deck
I took some photos of a product, The Hope Deck. This is a collection of verse cards with a stand. It also came with what it called “Love Notes,” which were just little notes that could be given to one’s loved ones. I used a light box in studio to shoot several of the shots. I also did some work outside the studio, shooting them in an environment in which they might be used. The white background in studio allows for all the focus to be on what the product is, and the beautiful designs of the cards. One thing I liked including was some flowers, as they add that positive aspect that fits with the cards.
Architecture
I enjoy taking photos of buildings. It can be more challenging because they are such large structures and finding the right angle can be difficult. I like finding the interesting shapes the buildings can create. I also like including elements of nature, which can give an idea of the surroundings and add a nice contrast between the more structured look of the building and the natural shape of nature.
I love taking photos of nature. I want to show small details that might easily be ignored. Sometimes I take a more macro approach, while other times I might step back and try to frame the subject in a more interesting way. I take a lot of photos of flowers because they come in so many interesting forms and are colorful, so I take most of my pictures in gardens. I like to have the sky in the background, as it gives the subject space. I also enjoy including insects to make the photos more engaging.
I have been a stock contributor on AdobeStock and Shutterstock since 2020.
For this, I was challenged to come up with a concept to photograph. I chose to illustrate hope, how it can be like a string of light in the darkness that helps one to keep going. I took photos of my model holding a rope, pretending to be climbing, and photos of the rope separately, with some flowers around it. The flowers help to add that positive aspect. I later edited the photos together so that the rope she is holding onto says ‘hope.’ One challenge was that I wanted a black background, which was hard to accomplish with the outside environment, as it was hard to position, and the wind kept blowing it. It was also unfortunately rather cold.
